The problem does not effect just the UK but everywhere, bits of plastic are either left or dropped to wash up on our beaches and sit there until it is moved. The EU's new Bathing Water Directive is causing controversy even before it has come into force. The tougher new rules mean that in some places, water that is currently considered perfectly safe for bathing, will be classed as dangerous to bathe in next year.
